Claim: Climate change is our nations top problem

Edit

Status: True

Summary: A report has been made by the CNA Corporation Military Advisory board that has determined climate change to be a global political conflict catalyst. Places such as the Middle East and Africa are running low on water due to the drying of major rivers. Rising sea levels are also costing people in these countries to have food shortages. The reports states that these aggravations can be a direct link to terrorism. These issues are going to cause American Troops to deploy in order to keep the peace but America has problems of its own to deal with if climate change disrupts the ecosystem causing floods, droughts or worse in the near future.

Origin and Prevalence

Coral Davenport, New York Times, May 13th 2014, Climate Change is a security threat. Climate change was fist prevalent in late (June) 1988, when James Hansen uses the term "global warming" when making a testimony to congress about the relationship between greenhouse gasses (effect) and the observed warming of our planet. Since then then has been many legislatures/bills passed and signed to reduce greenhouse gas emission into our atmosphere to try to preserve the clean air we breathe and drastic clime changes. The prevalence may also contain or have a relationship concerning climate change/global warming with money. An important note is the fact that America burns fossil fuels at a top 10 rate but import/exports them at a top 3 rate, meaning the fossil fuel/coal/oil industry in America is booming more than ever. The time line shows that since 1988 the U.S. has been proactive and progressive with their choices in cutting CO2 and carbon emission, but since our last presidential race we have gone the other direction with many executive orders that have cut regulations and provisions singed by many other presidents. We are for the first time digressing when it comes to climate change regulations and stances, for the first time in over 30 plus years. It is truly ashamed when our future generations overall health is now at risk due to cut provisions and regulation by the current Trump Presidency and Scott Pruitt's EPA administration.

The term Global warming has been used since 1988 until current times.

Issues and Analysis

The New York Time was founded on September 18, 1851 as New-York Daily times. It was then sold for a penny and started a western division known as the Times of California. The name was shortened in 1857 to The New-York Times. The paper grew influential in 1870-71 when they published stories on the leader of the Democratic Party, William Magear Tweed. In the 1940s the paper extended its reach by including a crossword, making an international edition, and adding the AM radio station. The sale of newspapers has started to decline recently due to social media. They have won 119 Pulitzer prizes. As of 2017, it has been ranked 27 in the U.S and 129 in the world. The New York Times has also produced some of the most popular newspaper blogs, 22 out of the 50. It is funded by the investment made by Carlos Slim and the dual shareholders. It is also paid for by the subscribers who pay to read The New York Times. It is regarded as the newspaper of record but readers rate its trustworthiness on the lower end of the scale due to its tendency to be a little biased.

The main source is from the CNA Corporation Military Advisory Board, called the National Security and the Accelerating Risks of Climate Change and it was published in May of 2014. CNA's mission is to investigate and analyze a broad range of national security, defense, and public interest issues, to provide the information needed to for the government to be more efficient and to keep the country safe and strong. Many of the people who work in CNA are retired Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps admirals and generals. They have also released a report on the Accelerating Risks of Climate Change over the last few years (in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2014) with updated information. The Quadrennial Defense Review, from the U.S. Department of Defense, which came out in March of 2014. This review talks about the threats that will come with climate change, so that the Department of Defense can make a strategy for how to go about dealing with the problems to come. The U.S. Global Change Research Program, It's the National Climate Assessment. The U.S. Global Change Research Program, was started in 1989 to "assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change."and they takes a look at climate change and its impact on United States and its people. All of the previous sources are from government organizations and often work with other government agencies. Penn States Center for Solutions to Weather and Climate Risks plan is to be able to give the appropriate knowledge and training so that the proper decisions can be made regarding weather and climate.
